Chimney Terms Explained

Unused Chimney

A chimney pot that is unprotected by a chimney terminal is susceptible to being “invaded” by leaves, birds and other small animals. The ingress of rain can cause damp problems in an unused chimney.

For an unused chimney – the fitting of a chimney capper that still allows ventilation is recommended. SEE PRODUCTS

Fire Smoking / Not burning properly

This can be caused by a number of factors, the most common of which is "downdraught". The fitting of a suitable chimney cowl can assist in curing a downdraught problem. SEE PRODUCTS

It is recommended that a professional is consulted who can advise on any particular problem before a cowl is purchased. A professional chimney sweep from an organisation such as NACS (National Association of Chimney Sweeps) www.chimneyworks.co.uk or a HETAS registered installer www.hetas.co.uk should be able to help you with your decision.

For a working chimney – the fitting of a birdguard with or without a raincap that does not obstruct the air flow of a working chimney will help with these problems. SEE PRODUCTS
